A Very Fine Swan Indeed – Body Image

I don’t know about you, but I don’t find ducklings at all ugly. Each one has its own level of cuteness to start with, and I know that each will go on to have its own strengths relative to its brethren. The best and strongest swimmer may not lay the best eggs for instance.

How do you view yourself?

You’re fat right? Your thighs are like tree trunks, maybe a bit heavy in the man boobs department? Boobs too small, boobs too big, hair too straight, hair too frizzy. We are never satisfied.

It is almost as though the world had not heard of airbrushing.

In recent weeks I have seen clients with body image problems. People generally not expected to have ‘issues’, a hunk of an athlete, a stunningly beautiful woman, a highly successful business person and a young girl not yet in her teens.

Can I stop the carb or sweet cravings - why yes - but that will not, on its own, resolve the cause of the issue.

What is striking is that most if not all of these issues began by accident. A chance remark about an obese child in the playground spawned a ten year ‘battle’ to never get fat resulting in excessive exercise in relation to quantity of food consumed and a subsequent issue of cravings for all things by way of manufactured carbs.

A young girl suffered a choking incident which made her much more aware of what and how she ate; she lost weight and enjoyed the compliments of her peers to the point that she carried on losing weight, to the concern of her parents who then had her tested for almost very possible illness under the sun. The anxiety of a highly successful business woman who had ballooned from a size 8 to a size 12.

It is all relative of course. It is amazing how we shift our guilt, blame onto ourselves, which then re-enforces the issue, confirming our suspicions that we just don’t measure up. Without doubt we should be aware of weight gain, and cravings especially if they are preventing us from achieving what we want. Here’s the question though – should we really be focusing on what makes us feel worse about ourselves. Should we not be focusing on what is good instead? Improve what we can and play to our strengths.

There are people with severe disfigurement that overcome these traumatic issues and whilst without doubt, not ‘liking’ the fact, push on and become swans in their own right, in fact often they become bigger and better at something they never would have thought of before.

How can you change how you see yourself, get the strength to tackle those issues troubling you? Recognise the ‘issue’ and resolve to learn how to cope or how to improve.

See yourself on the very edge of glory, not as an ugly duckling all tattered and torn and actually………..

a very fine swan fine indeed.
